CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

I expect sunlight to shine onto the roof, but the sky above is gray and cloudy. I never noticed if this is how it’d been the rest of the day.

I see Mae first, standing on the edge of the roof with both babies still in her arms. The sight of her stops me in my tracks. A few feet away from her, Jacob holds the remote in one hand and LES’s arm with his other. Next to him is the robot, which suddenly lifts 39 by the back of his shirt. The boy wiggles in the robot’s grasp, at least until he’s held out over the side of the roof.

An explosion of worry fills my insides when I don’t see King Ward among them. I suddenly feel as bad as if I didn’t see one of my infant sons.

“You have to leave him alone, please,” King Ward pleads. “You don’t understand how important he is.”

The King of River City looks at them from across the roof, just to the right of the doorway where I stand. He’s still in one piece, which is a huge relief, but the boy king doesn’t look nearly as happy to see us. As a matter of fact, he doesn’t even look in our direction, his eyes staying glued to 39.

“I’m getting tired of this, kid,” Jacob yells at 39. “When I order people to do something—or say something, in this case—I don’t give them a second chance if they don’t listen.”

Jacob pushes a few buttons on the remote and the robot’s arm moves up and down, shaking 39. A quiet ripping sound joins the winds swirling atop the roof. 39 begins to slide right out of his tearing shirt. LES tries to rush toward her son, but Jacob twists her arm so far behind her back that she cries out in pain and nearly falls.

“Put me back on the roof, you stupid robot,” 39 says. “Do it now! Why won’t it listen to what I say, Mommy?”

Jacob holds up the remote for the little boy to see.

“This is stronger than your words,” he says.

“Don’t listen to him, sweetheart,” LES says. “You’re still more powerful than—”

Jacob twists her arm harder and pushes her closer to the edge, grabbing hold of the front of her shirt. The balls of her feet hang over the ledge. LES is leaned back so far that if Jacob were to let go, she wouldn’t be able to regain her balance.

“Mommy!” 39 screams in fear, tears streaming down his face.

“Say it or she flies!” Jacob yells.

“Okay, just don’t hurt her,” 39 pleads. “Don’t push her off, I’ll say whatever you want.”

“Don’t,” I tell the boy. “Whatever he wants from you, don’t do it.”

“Don’t listen to that abomination,” Jacob tells 39. He pulls LES back to safety, dragging her a few feet away from the edge. “See, you can trust me. You and your mother can be together again. Now look at the robot and give the command.”

39’s frightened face slowly turns to the robot holding him.
